Check Your Content Management System

Content Management System or CMS

for short is a valuable commodity for websites, a quality CMS provides an intuitive interface for ease of use by the client. CMS's empower clients to edit their own content (images and text and pretty much anything on their website).

Today is an amazing time for CMS's because there are many free - yes I said FREE CMS's that are more robust, secure and flexible than most custom built CMS's by any local or national company. Check your CMS to see if it is a Freebee or a custom made CMS... if it's a freebee - then you may want to ask yourself a few questions! Like: am I paying my Website company annually for a CMS that cost them nothing? That's just one of the big questions to ask yourself! Do I have your attention now? :)

But First, lets check to see if your CMS is a freebee - the best way to check it is to go to your backend logon administration screen. Why go there you ask? Well, because these CMS are free and highly flexible - which means that any Web Design company that knows what they are doing, knows that they can augment most of the freebee CMS to make it look like it's a custom built CMS - haha, the trick is on the client - not very funny in my books... I find most people appreciate integrity! So, are you at the backend logon screen? If your site is a Joomla CMS - it will be something like www.yoursite.com/administrator - once you are there, there is a handy tool in a web browser (it's found in different spots for different browsers) that can check the source code of your logon page... if somewhere your source code says anything like - Joomla, or Drupal, or Wordpress - those are the most widely used ones - then you know that you have a freebee CMS... now for the questions!

  • Why would you want to pay annual fees for a free CMS?
  • Have you been given access to edit your website by your provider, even though your site is built with a free CMS - yet they charge you for any edits to the website?
  • Are you aware that there are hundreds of components and modules that are free or close to free as well that integrate seemlessly into your website - they only cost time to find and configure (and usually $200 per module is about $200/hr for their services)?
  • If the best CMS's in the world are now free - why bother hiring a webdesign company that doesn't utilize them?

  • I write this article because I remember once upon a time hiring a web design firm that cost our firm an arm and a leg for services that were quite poor - and I thought - there has to be a better and more cost-effective way to do this! Then, after training and research I started my own web design company to help educate clients and save people money!

Web sites don't have to cost much to look and function great!
